Have you ever heard about angels? I'm sure you did. But you probably haven't heard about mavkas.
Mavka is a beautiful female ghost dwelling in
Ukrainian woods. Mavkas are believed to be the souls of those who
suffered sudden death or committed suicide.
They sing and dance in glades, and mesmerize men to eventually
lead them to death. Mavkas do not have physical bodies, but there are
several times during the year when they can become "alive", and act and
celebrate like human beings, including consuming regular food. One of
such days is a holiday of Ivana Kupala, which occurs during the summer
solstice...
Once upon a time Mavka saw a young lad right on
Ivana Kupala's eve. They started festing, dancing, and jumping over the
fire. The celebration went on till dawn, and finally the youngster
poured some aromatic gold-colored liquor into Mavka's carved goblet...
When the morning came, Mavka could not make another sip -
she became a spirit again, who slowly perished into the dark woods. The
lad was woebegone. He asked a village smith to make a beatiful statue
who would look like a mystery girl he met; and so the smith did.
Many years passed... But every year on Ivana Kupala
night delicate blue flowers bloom on the cold dark statue of Mavka.
Amazingly, at the same night some whisky evaporates from the closed
bottles!..
Have you ever heard about angels' share? I'm sure you did. And now you know about mavkas' share too.
